Main Area of Research since 2012

The focus of the new research project is the topic of re/presentation of music – understood as an (lived) cultural practice – and of sound in the museum context: a subject area to be explored in relation to the specific intercorrelation of the history and culture of the Germans in and from Eastern Europe (and taking into consideration the theme complex of ‘flight and expulsion’). The objective is to observe current tendencies in the themes and presentation style of music/sound in relevant exhibition contexts, to discuss problems and difficulties related to the preparation and presentation of intangible cultural and migration assets in close dialogue with museum curators, media scientists and museologists and finally, based on the conclusions, to develop models for exhibiting and conveying music in a museum context, taking into consideration the interplay of both cultural history and the culture of remembrance in presentation.

Within the context of the current research project an international symposium will take place from 23rd to 25th October 2014, devoted to the topic "Exhibiting 'music': Re/presentations of music and sound in museum contexts". To find out more, please take a look at the workshop programme.
